The Hospital Arms

Colchester

Welcome to the Hospital Arms!

Once upon a time, this very spot was a well-kept secret among doctors and hospital staff, earning the nickname Ward 9—a clever way to keep things under wraps from unsuspecting patients. When the hospital moved in the 1980s, it was time for a fresh start, and the pub became the Tap & Spile. But some places are meant to come full circle, and in the late 1990s, we proudly reclaimed our historic name: The Hospital Arms.

Today, we carry on the tradition of great drinks, good company, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re here for a quiet pint, a lively chat, or a hearty meal, you’re in good hands.

Cheers to history, hospitality, and a great time at the Hospital Arms!

Adnams Southwold Bitter

Adnams
Southwold Bitter is a beautiful copper-coloured beer, late and dry-hopped with Fuggles for a distinctive, lingering hoppiness. Brewed with the finest East Anglian Pale Ale malt barley, sourced locally to the brewery. We use Fuggles hops which we add late in the boil to preserve the herbal flavours of this traditional English hop. We add more Fuggles to each cask so that the flavour of the hops infuses into the beer. It’s a perfect 3.7% abv in cask and 4.1% abv in bottle and can.
